What to see near Rome: the best places surrounded by nature

In our article "What to see near Rome: the best art and food destinations", we already explored the destinations around Rome that will allow you to discover some of the history of the region and to taste some typical dishes. With this article, instead, we want to recommend a few seaside destinations around the city and the best places to enjoy a healthy walk in nature.

It's time to cool off: the seaside destinations

You've come to see Rome, but are you getting the urge to escape to a lake or the sea for a day?

If you are a lover of lake destinations, we suggest you visit the cities located on the shores of Lake Bracciano. The village of Bracciano is one of the most renowned and popular in Lazio, no doubt thanks to the presence of the mirror-like water, but also thanks to the wonderful Orsini Odescalchi Castle, from which it is possible to enjoy a breathtaking view over the surrounding area. Less well-known, but certainly equally interesting and relaxing destinations are Trevignano Romano and Anguillara Sabazia, located on the heights of the Sabatini Mountains. Both offer wide, magnificent views towards the lake and are home to numerous typical restaurants to try out.

Bracciano Castello

If, on the other hand, you are a sea-lover, but are willing to go in search of a sea on the slightly better Lazio coast, we advise you to head to the area of Anzio and Nettuno, just over 60 kilometres from the city. Anzio is a famous seaside destination thanks to its services, its beaches and the numerous sporting activities available. It is also renowned for the excellent quality of the products and dishes of the typical local cuisine , particularly those based on fish, available in the restaurants of the Port.

Nettuno, as well as the adjacent seaside resort, presents a characteristic medieval village, which houses a series of monuments set between narrow streets and picturesque squares.

For lovers of nature excursions

If you want to get away from the heat of the city with a nice trip in nature, we recommend that you first venture out in search of the Monte Gelato Waterfalls, located in the heart of the Valle del Treja Regional Park north of Rome, near Sacrofano. The breathtaking show of the waterfalls, which has been the set of films several times over the years, can be reached via a beautiful walk in the untouched nature, which will be good for your health, your eyes and your soul.

Cascate Monte Gelato

Another pleasant walk is offered by the town of Arsoli, west of Rome, at the foothills of the Simbruini Mountains. The ancient village of Arsoli is dominated by Massimo Castle and surrounded by olive and cypress trees. A suggestive walk in the forest along the Pozzo del Diavolo path will lead you to discover the Dolmens, two slender and pointed limestone formations measuring about 15 metres each, locally known as the "Rocce della Femmina morta" ("Rocks of the Dead Woman"). It is not yet known if they are simple natural phenomena or sculptures of very ancient civilisations and this has given rise to various legends about their origin.

Remember that you can stay in one of our facilities. If you want to explore the southern Roman coast, the Fabulous Village is the place for you. I Pini Family Park in Fiano Romano, on the other hand, is perfect for reaching Lake Bracciano while remaining in the beautiful Roman countryside.
