The Lazio coast: the best places north of Rome

The most beautiful and talked about seaside resorts are probably found on the southern coast of Lazio (discover them in this article), but the northern coast also has some respectable places, where you can relax, enjoy the sea and eat delicious fish specialities. In this article, we will explore the most characteristic places, from nearby Fregene to the most northern locations, on the border with Tuscany.

The most beautiful beaches to the north of Rome

One of the beaches most frequented by Romans in summer is undoubtedly that of Fregene, probably due to its proximity to the city and to the presence of numerous establishments, offering beach services, lunches, aperitifs, dinners and evenings of various kinds throughout the season. Many establishments also offer water sports and entertainment for children, so that they can have fun while parents get a break and can relax in the sun. The beaches of Fregene are extremely lively but they certainly do not stand out for their beauty: we won't deceive you by telling you that it's like having the Caribbean just a stone's throw away from the capital! However, if you want a compromise between proximity to the city and a sea that is a little more crystal clear and less crowded, we recommend Passoscuro, a few kilometres north of Fregene. This is also a very popular place for locals throughout the summer.

If, on the other hand, your main goal is to enjoy a nice dish of fresh fish by the sea without going too far from the city, Fregene, Passoscuro and Maccarese (halfway between Fregene and Passoscuro) have excellent restaurants to suit everyone, including restaurants for younger diners and those that are more chic or suitable for romantic dinners. Maccarese, moreover, also has an equipped beach where you can spend the day with your four-legged friends.

About 40 kilometres from Rome, Marina di San Nicola has developed since the nineteen fifties as a seaside resort, attracting more and more VIPs with its villas surrounded by greenery. Despite this chic appearance, it is a place that is also very open to occasional bathers and is one of the most popular beaches for Lazio surfers. If you are looking for a quieter place for your day at the beach, we definitely recommend that you go beyond the Fregene area and go further north, to Marina di San Nicola!

A place that knows how to combine fantastic beaches with historical and cultural excursions is Santa Severa, situated on the coast about 60 kilometres from Rome. Santa Severa is known for the medieval castle of the same name that stands proud on the water and divides the coast into two types of beaches: on one side, you will find white sand, with a very clean sea but also with more beach establishments; on the other side, you'll find black sand, with a long stretch of free beach much loved by naturists. The recently renovated Castle of Santa Severa was also included by the weekly Time magazine in the list of "World's greatest places 2019". In addition to visiting the Castle itself, you can now also visit an interesting museum complex (which includes for example the Museum of the Sea and Ancient Navigation), as well as sleep in one of the 40 places available in the hostel inside the Castle. If sleeping in a castle has always been one of your dreams, you shouldn't miss this opportunity because how often do you get the chance to stay in a castle by the sea?

Finally, about 65 kilometres from Rome and only 10 kilometres from Santa Severa, we find the beautiful Santa Marinella, probably the most beautiful seaside town north of Rome before you reach Tuscany. Here you will find both sandy and rocky coves, as well as beaches with calm sea and shallow water suitable for children and beaches with rough seas much loved by surfers. We recommend you dive with a mask and snorkel in the quieter coves to enjoy the marine life. As in many other places on the coast, Santa Marinella also has excellent restaurants and the seafood specialities undoubtedly have zero food miles: from fried fish to spaghetti with clams, be sure to taste all the goodness of the Lazio coast.
