Venice Historical Regatta

An event not to be missed in Venice is the Historical Regatta on 1 September. This is a rowing race, a discipline practised for thousands of years in the Venice Lagoon. Before the actual race, the event is made even more spectacular by the famous historical procession: a parade of dozens and dozens of typical sixteenth-century boats, accompanied by costumed gondoliers carrying the Doge, the Dogaressa and all the highest officials of the historic Venetian judiciary.

The race is divided into four competitions, classified by age and type of boat. The most exciting regatta is that of the champions on gondolini, who row along the Grand Canal up to Palazzo della Ca ' Foscari.

You can take part in the Historical Regatta comfortably seated on the floating stand set up along the Grand Canal, near the ACTV stop of San Silvestro (one of the most strategic positions for the best view ????).

Programme of Sunday 1 September:

  • From 4:00 pm Historical-sporting procession: parade of historic boats and gondolas along the Grand Canal. Route: San Marco Basin, Grand Canal, Rialto, Ferrovia [Railway Station] and return along Grand Canal up to Ca' Foscari.
