Itinerary in the Florentine Chianti

Montefioralle, Greve in Chianti and Panzano

Itinerary in the Florentine Chianti, first stage Montefioralle

It would seem that the original name was Monteficalle, probably because of the fig trees that covered the hills around the walls. Later the name was changed to Montefioralle, certainly more elegant and aristocratic and certainly more appreciated by the nobles who lived here.

Montefioralle is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, a jewel in the municipality of Greve in Chianti, in the province of Florence.

A place that has kept its charm intact, thanks also to its privileged position and to the fact that the population over time has moved to the foot of the village, creating the town of Greve in Chianti.

Walking along the road around the village you will find an old house marked by a "V" and a wasp (the insect): the house belonged to the navigator and explorer Amerigo Vespucci, a native of Greve in Chianti.

The village developed around the castle, thus taking on an elliptical shape. The imposing building dominates the hill above the river Greve and it is one of the oldest villages in Tuscany.  It consists of a main road from which many alleys branch off and lead to the doors of the old stone houses. All around there are the walls that take the shape of the village.

Montefioralle is full of life, especially in the summer, when there are events and festivals of various kinds. The most famous is the Festa della Frittella, held in March during the week of St. Joseph. Frittelle are balls of rice cooked in milk with eggs and sugar and fried in oil. The famous Vin Santo del Chianti is served with these delicious sweets.

Second stage in Greve in Chianti: the Castello di Verrazzano and the Falorni butcher shop

Greve in Chianti, a few kilometres from Montefioralle, is one of the most extensive Italian towns and the main city in Florentine Chianti. Greve in Chianti is the centre of the local wine industry and was home to the famous explorer, Giovanni da Verrazzano, who lived in the castle of the same name, 3 km from the town centre. Today the castle of Verrazzano dominates a historic estate of 220 hectares, where Chianti Classico, Vin Santo, grappa, olive oil and honey are produced.

The square is the focal point of the town, full of shops and boutiques, including certainly the most famous, the Antica Macelleria Falorni [old Falorni butcher shop], which has been producing Tuscan pork specialities since 1729. A real institution in Greve and a stopping point for any traveller crossing the Chianti area. You should definitely try the typical Tuscan cold cuts such as the finocchiona sbriciolano, capocollo, gota, the rigatino and wild boar meat specialities, all paired with Tuscan bread.

Panzano in Chianti: lunch at Cecchini, the butcher poet

From Greve, we go down for about seven kilometres in the direction of Panzano in Chianti, along the Poggi road, from which you can admire breathtaking landscapes.

Once you reach the ancient village of Panzano, you can visit the Church of Santa Maria dell'Assunta, which boasts a striking stone staircase and is perfect as the backdrop for beautiful souvenir photos.  As you walk through the streets of the village, you will feel like you have been catapulted back in time.

The Butcher Poet, i'Cecchini, the man who recites verses to fat and hates steak, is a mandatory stop.

He is certainly the most famous person in Panzano, who, in addition to managing the restaurant with meat dishes of the highest quality, also runs the adjoining, ancient butcher shop where you can buy meat and meat products and eat them, sitting at a common table, where the menu is at the discretion of the landlord.

Where to sleep in the Chianti area

The best way to enjoy and appreciate the beauties of Chianti is to make it the base for your stay in Tuscany.

If you have a few more days, take the opportunity to find out more about this wonderful region. There is more to this beautiful area than the villages, churches and castles; there are also the hilly landscapes with their vineyards and olive groves to admire all in one go while taking tasty breaks in one of the many wineries that offer tastings and sales of wine and typical products.
