Art in Italy

"Bel Paese"

Italy has been a tourist destination for hundreds of years, both for its landscapes and for its art. Every city, village and neighbourhood contains statues, monuments or paintings which are the envy of the world.

Our villages and campsites are always in ideal locations to visit art cities and places full of cultural attractions. From the North, heading South, you can do the famous "Grand Tour".

Near the Altomincio Family Park, on Lake Garda, there are two wonderful cities: Mantua and Verona, with historical centres and monuments which make them well worth visiting.

In Mantua, don't miss the Palazzo Ducale, the palace of the Gonzagas, with its frescoes and richly decorated rooms.

The symbol of Verona, however, is the Casa di Giulietta with the famous balcony where, tradition has it, Shakespeare's Juliet appeared to Romeo.

Returning to the shores of the lake, another unmissable tourist attraction is the Vittoriale degli Italiani, an architectural and monumental complex built by the poet and soldier Gabriele D'Annunzio, dedicated to Italy's involvement in the First World War.

Jolly Camping in Town is ideal for visiting Venice, the Queen of the Adriatic, a unique city thanks to its canals, bridges and beautiful buildings. The city boasts a rich and varied cultural and artistic heritage, embellished by the reflections of its canals. High among the list of tourist attractions to visit is the Palazzo Ducale, seat of the Venetian doge and magistrates. Among the museums you'll find the Galleria Internazionale dell’Arte Moderna Ca’ Pesaro, the Museo Correr, one of the most representative of the city, and the Peggy Guggenheim collection of 20th century European and American art.

Travelling south you arrive in Florence, cradle of the Renaissance, with works of art in every corner of the city, starting from the imposing Duomo with Brunelleschi's Dome, one of the largest in the world. Passing from the beautiful Piazza della Repubblica, by way of Piazza Signoria and Palazzo Vecchio, you reach the Uffizi Gallery, one of the 20 most important museums in the world.

While you can, in the Uffizi, admire drawings and paintings by Leonardo Da Vinci and Michelangelo, and see the world-famous Botticelli's Venus, if you want to see the original statue of Michelangelo's David you have to go to the Galleria dell’Accademia.

Don't leave without crossing the Ponte Vecchio!

Continuing further south, you'll arrive in Rome, both a city and an open-air museum.

As well as being the capital of Italy, Rome is also the peninsula's historical and artistic centre, with monuments and ancient buildings scattered throughout the city.

Among these are the Colosseum, the largest amphitheatre in the world; the Pantheon, the wonderful temple of the gods; the Roman Forum; the Trevi Fountain; and the squares (Piazza di Spagna, Piazza Navona...). As far as museums are concerned, it's worth mentioning the Galleria Borghese, which displays masterpieces by Caravaggio, Bernini, Raphael and many other famous artists, and the Vatican Museums including the Sistine Chapel, frescoed with Michelangelo's Last Judgement.
